Everyone wants Gronk. Understandable. But it wouldn't have been the best choice.

When it comes to picking the perfect person to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at Fenway Park Tuesday there is one candidate who would have stood out head and shoulders above all else: Craig Kimbrel.

Unfortunately, that is not going to happen. According to a source, Kimbrel has chosen not to attend the pregame ceremony at Fenway Park celebrating the Red Sox' 2018 world championship.

Kimbrel is, of course, the unsigned relief pitcher who remains a free agent. He has spent much of his time this offseason working out at Babson College, still living in the Boston area. The time for the Red Sox to show interest in bringing back the closer has come and gone. They have made it clear for some time that the kind of allocation of resources it would take to ink Kimbrel were not in their plans. And when it became clear throughout the first 11 games of the season that finding a closer was the least of the Sox problems than any murmurs regarding a reunion were immediately silenced.

Details emerge about Red Sox championship celebration

ROB BRADFORD

This we know: Robert Kraft, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick won't be at the Red Sox' home opener. (Thanks to the Mut & Callahan Show for that bit of information.) Also, at least one member of the Patriots, Stephon Gilmore, will be in attendance.

This we do not know: Who will be throwing out the first pitch. (Calling Gronk?)

But there are some particulars that have nothing to do with the Patriots' presence the Red Sox want fans to know regarding their celebration of the 2018 world championship team Tuesday. Here is what the team released Monday morning:

The Red Sox open their 119th home season, and their 108th at Fenway Park, this Tuesday, April 9, starting at approximately 1 p.m. Fans are asked to be in their seats by 12:45 p.m. The team plays the Toronto Blue Jays at 2:05 p.m.

The pre-game ceremonies will include the unveiling of the 2018 Championship banner, the presentation of the World Series rings, the raising of the 2018 Championship flag, the performance of the national anthem, a fly-over, the Ceremonial First Pitch, and the call to “Play Ball.”

Hanscom Air Force Base military will line the length of the Green Monster wall as the American flag drops for the anthem. Musicians of the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra and the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, led by Keith Lockhart, will perform both the Canadian and American national anthems.

Maintaining a long-time home opener tradition, the anthem will be punctuated by a fly-over of four F-16 jets from the 113th Wing, District of Columbia Air National Guard.

The singing of God Bless America in the middle of the 7th inning will be performed by Springfield native Michelle Brooks Thompson.

In honor of the 2018 championship, players will wear special gold-trimmed Red Sox hats and jerseys with gold stitching around the World Series Championship patch on the hat and left sleeve of the jersey, and around the letters and numbers on the front and back of the jersey.

Before the home opener festivities, an Air Force swearing-in ceremony will take place at Fenway Park for 30 Air Force recruits at 9 a.m. on the warning track near “Canvas Alley.”

Fenway Park gates will open at 11:35 a.m., 2 ˝ hours before the first pitch. For the rest of the regular season, gates will open 1 ˝ hours before the game, except for Season Ticket Holders and Red Sox Nation members, who may enter at Gate C 2 ˝ hours before each game.

As always, and especially on midweek day games, the Red Sox urge fans to take the T. In addition to the Green Line stops at Kenmore Square, the commuter rail is located just 511 feet from the doorstep of Fenway Park. Fans should be aware that effective today, Monday, April 8, the MBTA has announced that the Yawkey Station on the Framingham/Worcester Commuter Rail Line will be renamed Lansdowne Station. For more commuter rail information, visit mbta.com.

(3-9)

58 teams in the WC era have started (3-9)

Only 3 made the playoffs. That gives Boston about a 5.7% chance

I would. I’m more worried about the starting pitching though at this point.

And Kris Bryant. Dude looked like a breakout superstar his rookie year, but has been average at best ever since.

Hard to win when you are missing the best player in baseball. Nice timing for the Cubbies!

I guess sandy Leon and Erasmo Ramirez are going to save our season.

The pink hats will do anything except blame those who are playing and responsible for what has happened. God forbid being critical. It has to be because Sandy Leon was not there!

99% of teams in mlb do not have a great catcher and the Red Sox won a WS without one last year. Starting pitching is the problem and These pitchers should be able to execute their shit no matter who is behind the plate. Stop making fucking excuses pink hats. Go get your Pom poms on cuz the game starts in a couple hours

I don't think so. He hit 98 last night. The problem is Boston pitched all their starters very limited innings in the exhibition season. They wanted to rest them after the long postseason run. I think Sale only pitched 7 innings before the season started?

It shouldn't be an excuse because they should be better than they are but i do think they regret that decision now. He says no injury or anything wrong. He just stinks right now.

You probably didn't watch the game but literally everything that can go wrong has gone wrong. Mookie hits a ball that bounces on top of the wall in right and bounces backwards for a double. It literally hit right on top of the wall and momentum carries that out 99% of the time. This one catches a tiny 1/2 inch lip and comes backwards. Would have tied the game at 2. Instead it was 2nd & 3rd no outs and they don't score.

Pitching, horrible. Offense, horrible. Luck or intangibles, zero so far. I am not sure they can play any worse right now.

Top prospect Chavis called up by Red Sox.

About damn time...

Simply put, this kid is a stud! Plays 3B (most often) and 1B...started 7 games at SS for PawSox. Definitely will play 3B.

His draw back: was suspended 75 games (last season) for testing positive for PED.

Forgot to mention...

Have no idea why he needed the PED - was highly touted when drafted. Hopefully he'll give some spark to the Sox. Pedroia, Brock and Nunez on the DL, yikes!!
