A 12-0 Trend!

Last year I posted this exact same thread only it read "An 11-0 Trend." It hit again LY so now it's 12:

Army-Navy has gone UNDER 12 years in a row! (Last year it was way under with only 27 points scored.)

As NY Knight pointed out last year, there is likewise a longterm trend on UNDERs in all service academy games and indeed this year both Army-Air Force and Navy-Air Force went UNDER.

The total right now for Army-Navy is 40, which is very low but this trend is powerful.

My theory is that as both teams run the option, they constantly practice it on defense and therefore are very good at stopping it. And, both coaching staffs are expert on it.

For what it's worth, this is one of the few team trends that I think matter. Most are coincidences as personnel changes over the years, etc. But this one has some logic behind it.

I'm not recommending a play necessarily and it does seem like the total is really low this year---probably because of the trend---but do think the stat is rather fascinating

The under is 10-0 when Army squares off against a team attempting more than 49 rushes per game under head coach Jeff Monken. The average final score is 31.5 points. Navy carries the ball 57.3 times per game, fourth-most in the FBS behind Army (66.7), Georgia Tech (58.8) and Air Force (57.8).

The under is 5-1 when Navy faces off against a defense surrendering fewer than 27.5 points per game. The Midshipmen average 15.3 points, never scoring more than 24 in a contest. Army enters allowing 18.7 points per game.

The under is 20-3 (87%) when Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo takes on either Army or Air Force.

The under is 42-14-1 when two Military teams (Army, Navy and Air Force) play each other ... including 19-2-1 more recently.

factor in the one or two totally botched trick plays they always do for some reason, no long passing pass interference calls as they dont throw long. and the tradition of not changing something in the game plan even if its not working at all

army wins 27-6
