ESPN Prepared To Make Tony Romo Highest-Paid Sportscaster In History

ESPN is preparing an offer that would make Tony Romo the highest-paid sportscaster in TV history, with a multi-year deal that would pay him between $10 million to $14 million annually, said sources.

ESPN declined to comment. A representative for Romo could not be reached for comment.

If signed by ESPN, Romo could succeed Booger McFarland as the analyst on “Monday Night Football,” said sources. Romo could also potentially quarterback ESPN’s NFL game coverage if parent Disney acquires a Sunday afternoon game package from rival Fox Sports, CBS Sports, and NBC Sports during the next round of NFL TV negotiations in 2020-2021.

No deal has been signed yet, and one source said any negotiation for a new contract for Romo might not wrap up until a month or two after Super Bowl 54.

CBS also has a right to match any offers for Romo, according to sources.

A deal of this size would possibly reset the pay scale for top TV sports personalities.

The 39-year-old former Dallas Cowboy quarterback is currently making about $4 million annually on the final year of his three-year rookie broadcasting deal at CBS.

Troy Aikman, Fox’s top NFL game analyst, makes around $7.5 million per year

I like him, definitely the best of the current guys

but he does sometimes ramble and think out loud, sometimes it makes sense sometimes it doesn't

and I dont know if he will be great with another guy besides Nantz, you never know

they just have good chemistry

vastly overrated and has to analyze every offense play before it happens. Let the game come to the viewers , not the other way around.

I agree with you guys on Romo, the other guy can't get a word in edgewise. OJ was the worst of the worse sportscasters or whatever his job was, he sounded like Mushmouth on the Fat Albert show.!!

I agree with those who like Romo. He is refreshing and does a good job. I mute Aikman and Buck. Aikman is the worst. Fox needs a new number 1 Team where is Summeral and Madden!

No clue. Watch with the sound off and listen to music. Much better for live betting.

Crazy no one is worth 17 million to talk sports. But I guess that what the market is paying. I think Romo is OK . No one is worth 17 million , not even brain surgeons.

Trade news ...

ESPN plans to attempt to trade for NBC’s Al Michaels for Monday Night Football, per Andrew Marchand.

The plan would be to pair him with Peyton Manning. If this was to happen, NBC has Mike Tirico ready to step in.

ESPN also has interest in Philip Rivers.

What's next? XFL gonna claim Booger off Waivers?

Romo's reign as the highest-paid TV sports analyst short-lived?

Reports surfacing that ESPN is prepared to offer Peyton Manning $18 million to $20 million a year to call Monday Night Football
