NFL Network's David Carr says that it's 'very possible the Giants could make a move for' San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo as a way to generate competition for New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones.

Mike Florio recently discussed the possibilities for Jimmy G:

The Browns.

If the Browns lose Deshaun Watson to a full-season suspension, they need to decide whether to go with Jacoby Brissett or someone else. Garoppolo could be the someone else. The key becomes the financial side of the equation and San Francisco’s trade expectations. With the Browns getting a fifth-round pick in 2024 that can become a fourth-round selection, the 49ers shouldn’t be looking for much more.

The Steelers.

If rookie Kenny Pickett won’t be ready, the question becomes whether Garoppolo would be better than Mitch Trubisky. Many would say that, despite Garoppolo’s inability to get the 49ers over the top, he is.

The Falcons.

All due respect to Marcus Mariota, but Jimmy Garoppolo seems like a better option, if the goal is to win games in 2022 and not simply let nature take its course en route to a top draft pick in 2023.

The Lions.

Jimmy Garoppolo vs. Jared Goff? Advantage Garoppolo.

The Seahawks.

It’s still not clear whether they had any real interest in Baker Mayfield. Is Garoppolo better than Geno Smith or Drew Lock? Probably. Would the 49ers and Seahawks do that deal? Not likely, but it wouldn’t be unprecedented for a quarterback to be traded to a division rival (Donovan McNabb, Drew Bledsoe come to mind).

The Saints.

As mentioned in conjunction with Mayfield, the Saints were one of the teams pursuing Deshaun Watson. Is Garoppolo a better option than Jameis Winston? The Saints would have to make that assessment.

The Texans.

Plenty of connections exist between Garoppolo and the Texans executives who worked in New England when Garoppolo was there. Is he better than Davis Mills? Yes. The question is whether the Texans prefer to let Mills try to find a ceiling that could be higher than Garoppolo’s.

The 49ers.

Keeping Garoppolo has always been an option. Would they do it at $25 million for 2022? That would be foolish. Could they work out a new deal now with the understanding he’ll take less, potentially earn some of it back if he plays, and become a free agent in March? He’d have to want to do that. Comments he made earlier this year would suggest that he doesn’t.

The Dolphins.

We meet again, TuAnon. Is Garoppolo currently better than Tua? That’s the question. And new coach Mike McDaniel, who worked with Garoppolo in San Francisco, likely has seen enough from both to know the answer.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to be fully cleared by mid-August, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday.

Garoppolo met in the last few days with Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who performed Garappolo's surgery, and his shoulder is progressing well. Rapoport added that by being fully cleared, Garoppolo is expected to be able to make a full range of throws.

Garoppolo was injured during the 49ers' NFC Divisional Round win over the Dallas Cowboys. The injury required shoulder surgery and rehab that was expected and did keep him out of mandatory minicamp. With Garoppolo unable to throw for much of the offseason, it also threw a monkey wrench into the Niners' plans to trade the QB as they cleared the way for 2021 first-round draft choice Trey Lance to take the reins.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported a week prior that Garoppolo was still expected to be traded by the end of July. Garoppolo's injury progress would seem to further those expectations for an upcoming swap. The Niners are reportedly "thrilled" about where the QB is health-wise. However, as noted by Rapoport, there won't be any news on a new destination for Garoppolo until he's fully healthy and ready to play.

The San Francisco 49ers have given Jimmy Garoppolo's agents permission to seek a trade involving the veteran quarterback, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Garoppolo, who is recovering from offseason surgery on his throwing shoulder, has been cleared to start practicing as the Niners prepare for the start of training camp next week, a team source told Schefter.

Roger Goodell is pushing for Deshaun Watson to be suspended for the entire season. if that happens browns should trade for jimmy g. can't see them going to the playoffs with jacoby brissett at qb the entire season in the loaded afc. even with jimmy g browns might not make the playoffs but they have to make a move.

In a surprising twist, Jimmy Garoppolo's time in San Francisco is not over, and he will remain with the 49ers as an experienced backup to Trey Lance.

NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo reported Monday that the 49ers and Garoppolo are finalizing a new contract that will make him the highest-paid backup quarterback in the NFL. Garoppolo's new deal is worth $6.5 million fully guaranteed with incentives that can push it to close to $16 million, Rapoport and Garafolo added. The reworked deal also will lower Garoppolo's 2022 salary-cap number from $26.95 million to around $8.5 million.

NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported that Garoppolo's contract also includes a no-trade clause and a no-franchise tag clause. Thus, the QB controls where he goes and will be a free agent after this season.

Monday's new development arrives after a prolonged waiting period in which the veteran quarterback underwent shoulder surgery and spent all of training camp on the 49ers' roster rehabbing.
