You should get some particulate masks or respirators for your family and keiki's, in case it really gets bad. Be safe my friend. <tup>

We have members in Hawaii? If you see one of those boulders or lava balls flying up, do not run until you see it hit its apogee, then run 90 degrees to its path.

Inter arma enim silent lēgēs

" in times of war, the law falls silent."

This is also true in times of danger. After Mt St. Helens blows a man is asked:

The camping records have you on the top. Did you see a brown station wagon? The man replies Yes. I was behind him. He drove around the tight corners fast enough but he never drove much over 55 on the straightaways. I passed him driving 110 and last saw him around (some corner, I forget).

Why were you driving 110 mph? He replies, It was slightly uphill there and that was as fast as my car would go! The Ranger replies; too bad for them, that area is under 30 feet of ash and rocks now.

No speeding charges are brought up. Brown car driver stupidly obeyed the gas-saving law.

Stay safe guys and good luck.

Get out before a 400 mph lava flow chases you

A pyroclastic flow (also known as a pyroclastic density current or a pyroclastic cloud)[1] is a fast-moving current of hot gas and volcanic matter (collectively known as tephra) that moves away from a volcano reaching speeds of up to 700 km/h (430 mph).[2] The gases can reach temperatures of about 1,000 C (1,830 F).

Pyroclastic flows are a common and devastating result of certain explosive eruptions; they normally touch the ground and hurtle downhill, or spread laterally under gravity. Their speed depends upon the density of the current, the volcanic output rate, and the gradient of the slope.

As of 5- 22- 18
This will probably continue for a few weeks, a couple of weeks for sure. A lot more lava in the tubes coming down the East Rift zone, from the Kilauea caldera, some 16-18 miles away. Many families have lost virtually everything, their homes are gone.

I posted in a bitcoin thread how BTC is like land:

Everyone needs at least a little and it is hard to make. Then a bit about some land in AZ in 1971 @ $200/acre and last year $20,000 acre.

$100/acre? There are still vacant lots there for $16,900 to $24,900. At least the 1969 buyer got half the standard 99-year lease.

Monday Update

12:20 p.m.

The Hawaii Department of Transportation reports they are lowering the speed limit on Highway 130, between Leilani Estates and Kamaili Road, to 25 miles per hour.

This is a safety measure for everyone who drives over the steel plates installed over cracks caused by volcanic activity.

The area continues to be monitored for your safety.

Lava flow crossed into PGV property overnight but has not impacted any wells.

A special task force headed by Tom Travis continues to work to make the wells safe and to prevent any threats to the public from developing.

There is no hydrogen sulfide detected. The public will be kept informed of the situation.

Volcanic gases and vog emissions may increase in areas down wind of the vents in the lower east rift zone.

Due to the volcanic activity and increasing vog, the following policies are in effect:

Take action to limit further exposure to volcanic gases and be prepared to leave the area with little to no notice.
Due to southerly winds and heavy output of vog from the summit on Monday night, be prepared for a possible increase in vog and volcanic gas levels in the Hamakua area, lower Hilo and Puna

May 29, 8:25 a.m.

Highway 132 was shut down at 6:45 this morning from Lava Tree State Park to Four Corners due to a fast moving lava flow approaching the highway. Everyone is advised to avoid the area.

Due to the volcanic activity, the following policies are in effect:

Beach Road is the only access into lower Puna.
Access to Issac Hale Beach Park for recreation is closed.
Residents close to the active eruption must remain alert to changes in the flow direction, and are advised to prepare for voluntary evacuation should their areas become threatened.
You are advised to make necessary plans and monitor your radio or phone for Civil Defense alerts.

The National Weather Service reports Pele’s Hair is falling in the Pahoa area. The following is provided for your information:

Pele’s Hair is sharp, thin strands of volcanic glass fibers, carried on the wind.
Avoid touching it or getting it in your eyes.
It can cause injury to eyes and lungs if breathed in.
Pele’s Hair is abrasive. If it lands on your windshield do not use your wipers to clear it.
